I've had the opportunity to test out Windows 7 and I must say, I really like what I see! Not only is it quick, but the engineers at Microsoft have finally begun to realize that their software needs to make sense!

Enough of the Kudos, I still personally believe that Microsoft has a long way to go before they ever get a clue... so, on to the topic at hand: Getting the Intel 865 video drivers to work on Windows Vista and Windows 7.

On first install of either OS, the standard VGA drivers provided by MS are used for display. While this might work fine in some situations, other issues are presented like video responsiveness, screen resolution etc. I decided to test out Windows 7 on an old HP 2.4GHz system I had lying around which has the Intel 865 onboard video. I recently ran into a similar issue on a clients computer where they had upgraded an (even older HP) from XP to Vista and they had the similar issue where the video drivers really needed to be updated to have a smooth experience. Since I can't remember exactly where I found the "fix", I regret to say that I cant give props to the person who figured this out... but, I do want to report that updating the Intel 865 video drivers on Windows 7 using the following method works like a charm!

Short Version

Manually update using the Intel 865 XP Professional Drivers. (Trust me, they work fine...)

Long and Involved Version

1. Download the latest Windows XP driver for the intel 865 graphic card. (I used the XP Professional version) download

1. Download the XP Professional version of the Intel 865 graphic driver. When I originally wrote this, Intel kept lots of drivers. 15 years later, those drivers are no longer on Intel's website so you'll have to get creative. You might see if you can find similar drivers from Dell, for example a quick search resulted in Intel 865 v.6.14.10.4396, A09. (Do a web search for that) Point is, you'll have to dig to find a working driver, then follow the steps below.

2. After extracting the driver, go to "Device Manager" in Vista or Windows 7.

  • Easiest way to get there is "Win key + pause/break" -> "Device Manager"...
  • Second easiest way is to click "Start", right click "Computer" -> "Properties" -> "Device Manager"
  • Third way is to fumble around in the control panel until you find it... good luck...

3. Click on the arrow to the left of "Display Adapters" and you should see the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" drop down.

4. Right click on the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" and choose "Update Driver Software"

5. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software"

6. Choose "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

7. Find the "Have Disk" button (lower right corner) and click on it

8. Browse to the location where you extracted the Intel 865 XP driver zip file and go into the win2000 folder, then choose "Open"

9. You should see a driver in the main box now, that says it's for the Intel 865 Graphic Adapter. Choose "Next" and it will begin the driver installation.

10. Once the driver is installed, reboot and you are all done!

Update: 2009/09/27 Due to a comment posted below, I am introducing a disclaimer that this method is NOT SUPPORTED by Intel. That doesn't mean it WONT WORK... If it breaks something, please insert $0.50 and try again...

Update: 2010/03/01 I am not 100% sure, but I believe that this workaround will also work for the Intel 845 video drivers as well. Just make sure to download the driver for the 845 instead of the 865 (they might actually be the same though...) Anyone who has been successful in getting this to work, feel free to post a comment and let us know :)

Tanx alot man your the best

Thnk u so much....
Nothng ws working, i ws about to format win7 and install xp, then i see this site...and it really worked....really good advice(y)..

You have the best article\advice on how to get video card working on old PC (DELL Dimension 4600) with Windows 7. Unfortunately it is not easy to find. I even talked to DELL Tech. support and they told me that my old DELL will not really work with Windows 7: completely not true. This problem (lost video and sound) is very common when moving from XP to Windows 7 and Web saturated with dead ends on how to fix it. I can't believe that your advice is not on a first Google search page: it is simple, straight forward and working fine. Thanks!

Hi, Still works in 2014 (after searching for hours)

Thank you very much!!!

thanks friend working

its work for me..u a great...THANK UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Thanks :-) It works, you made my win 7 life easy

Dell Dimension 4600 (Intel 865 chipset)
Windows 7 Home Premiun x32

Using the latest Intel drivers (14.17) it worked fine until I launched the Windows Media Player to view a DVD. The large Media Player busy icon was displayed, the DVD hummed, and then instead of a movie I got a BSOD. I could find no workaround.

I would love to hear if anyone was able to view a DVD using Window Media Player with these drivers.

Being curious to see if it was computer specific or drivers specific on the BSOD Windows Media Player / DVD issue, I decided to check out the computer I have that has the Intel 865 drivers. I stuck a DVD in the drive, opened Windows Media Player and BAM! BSOD... I am pretty sure it is a driver issue not playing nicely with Windows 7 and beggars can't really be choosers in this situation...

SO, my workaround fix is to abandon Windows Media Player altogether for playing DVD's and instead install VLC media player which is an open source video player, supporting just about every major video codec known to the computer world. (Including DVD's) I have it on the same computer that gave me the BSOD and it played the exact same DVD without a problem. I realize it is nice to have everything playing nicely together but in a situation where you have an old computer with "hacked" if-you-will drivers, I wouldn't be too terribly choosy on making the thing work right, but rather just making it work.

big Thanks!

Just tried this too and it worked great.
I would like to mention that I did need to re set my power settings after the installation.
(kept going to sleep - LOL)

Yep it worked just fine.

What kind of world are you in ... ?

The Graphics driver installation method which you've suggested is a FAILED METHOD which has been denounced since many years.

=============================================================
Read the following correctly:

"INTEL has stopped support for Windows Vista / 7 for all Intel Motherboards below Intel 915."

I HAVE checked it out... I have successfully installed those drivers using the method suggested on two separate computers. When was the last time you checked it out? Just because Intel says they are "not supporting" something, doesn't mean that the driver won't physically work on the newer OS's. Do you not remember the Windows 2000 -> Windows XP days? Many manufacturers stated that the "windows 2000 drivers were not made for XP" and they were working on XP drivers, but in fact the windows 2000 drivers would work just fine. The reason manufacturers tell you that they aren't made, or not supported is because they don't want the liability on their hands of coding that might not work 100% on an OS that they aren't specifically coding for. (Not to mention the bombardment of support requests)... Stopping Support is completely different than the statement Will not work. It doesn't mean a driver won't work just because it isn't supported... It just means in this case that if the driver doesn't work, you can't go crying to Intel about it...

I try things. Especially with computers. You can't "break" software on a computer. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work. If it hoses the OS, reload Windows...

I don't assume that something isn't possible just because someone tells me so. I try it and come up with my own conclusion.

awesome man its really work for me tanks

This worked for me, Thanks for the idea.

Thanks, worked for me fine on Windows 7 Ultimate.
