How-To Defrag Your Hard Drive
One 'sometimes' essential task to perform on your computer is to defragment the hard drive. Defragging is kind of like putting a puzzle together. You can see the picture on each piece of the puzzle, but you would have a hard time knowing what the full picture is unless it was all together. Windows writes files to a hard drive sort of like someone dumping puzzle pieces on the floor. Defragging takes the pieces of those files and puts them all together like putting the puzzle together.
So how do we do this?
- Click on
Start-> Click onControl Panel-> Double click onAdministrative Tools-> Double click onComputer Management. - The Computer Management screen is split into a 'left' and 'right' side. Look on the left side for

Degragmentto begin the defrag process.
The defrag process can take anywhere from 5 minutes to several hours, so be patient. You can minimize the window (minus sign at the top right by the 'x') and continue working on other things if you want.
When I click Defragment, It tells me I don't have enough Disk Space Free
Usually when this happens, you can go ahead and click yes to continue. If you aren't able to click yes, then you will need to clean up old files and temporary files from your computer to make room.
